What would you give to have real, Bruce-Lee like power? Real, honest-to-goodness, not found in action movies, knockdown power. What are the first steps to developing this kind of intensity of strike?
We are talking about hits that really do have the ability to defeat your attacker in one blow. Those who follow the principles of JKD, Bruce Lee’s style, know that a real self-defense situation will end in just a couple of moves, if either fighter knows practical application.
So, how do you begin to develop the kind of power that could stop an attacker in his tracks?
Deciding Which Specific Technique
The first step is to decide which specific technique you’d like to improve. Do you want a superpower elbow strike? Maybe a power uppercut punch?
The reason you need to decide is because each technique has a different way to unlock its power. Each move is based on different biomechanics.
Bruce Lee knew this.
Bruce Lee Trained Different Power Techniques … Differently
Because the one-inch punch is such a short, quick technique, the power has to occur with a burst of penetration. A short burst.
On the other hand, a haymaker punch is a much longer, wilder technique. To develop power for that kind of a hit would require more of a whipping motion.
The difference between the two techniques is obvious, if you understand how the body moves.
A similar distinction could be made between a side kick and a stop kick. A side kick to the mid section requires an almost “piston-like” action in the kick, to kick with power. On the other hand, a stop kick has a shorter movement, with a halting of the movement, as soon as the snap is achieved. It almost locks at the full extension of the kick.
Analysis of Getting More Power
After deciding which technique to work on, you have to analyze how to get power in that particular technique. One-inch punches, hay makers, side kicks, and low, front stop kicks all require different training methods.
Fortunately, those who have come before, like Bruce Lee, did a lot of this analysis and recorded their results. You can benefit from the teachings of others, especially if you are trying to get Bruce Lee like power….
