Charles – Today’s topic will cover how to help people see the distinct difference between martial arts training and reality-street survival training.  Can you give us, Bob, say, four key differences in these two?
Bob – Yeah, I can do that.
The Number 1 Difference Is – Time To Learn – You go ahead and learn martial arts, and people talk about 5 years, 10 years to get your black belt.  But my problem is, if I train with you today, I want you to be ready to survive a fight tomorrow.  Street self defense and street survival is learning how to defend yourself in a very short amount of time.  We’re not talking about years before you can fight.
Charles – Excellent.
Bob – Now –
The Second Difference Is – The Need For Constant Training – Martial Arts is based on repetition, techniques.  Martial arts is based upon some fitness.  And when a reality-based instructor teaches somebody how to fight in the street, they teach them something that they learn, understand one time, where they don’t need to train on every single day to be able to do this in a year or two.
The Third Difference Is – Safety Equipment In My Opinion Is Not Needed To Train People In Survival Fighting – Full contact training teaches you for example with the mouth piece, not to bite.  With head gear and gloves, it teaches you not to attack the eyes – not to attack the throat.  So, if you see someone doing full contact training where they are training with safety protection, you are particularly teaching your students not to use some of the most effective techniques possible. 
The Fourth  Difference Is – Basically Tricks Not Techniques – A good reality-based instructor could teach you the basic concepts to strike somebody in the throat, kick somebody in the knee, head-butt somebody, etc., in a very short amount of time and you will understand it even if you don’t know precisely what to do as in a step 1, step 2, step 3 type of explanation. 
With martial arts, they come with complicated techniques, and you take years and months to learn, and if you don’t do them constantly, you forget them.  A reality-based instructor will teach, this is an easy way to hit someone in the nose.  This is an easy way to break some body’s leg.  And that’s it.  And if you understand it, you don’t have to be perfect to get the same effect.

Do you think that the approach to self defense and self protection is the same for women and middle-aged men? In this article, you will discover that there are 2 important mindsets that are vital for effective self defense for the woman as well as for the middle-aged man, 50 and over.
When you walk into the typical strip-mall martial arts dojo to observe a lesson, what is it that you typically see? You usually see, young people, say between the ages of 18 and 35, predominantly and on the average (with the exception of course of the teacher who he himself may be in his 40’s or 50’s) more males than female. You will likely see a lot of showing off of high and spectacular kicks by the senior students. This is the typical traditional martial arts scenario.
What I want to talk about now is what sort of reality-based, proven, easy and tested method can the average woman and/or middle-aged man utilize for effective self defense and self protection.
Essentially there are 2 mindsets that in particular the average woman and middle-aged man must adopt because in both of these cases it will almost always involve a bigger and stronger man attacking you.
The 2 Mindsets for Women’s Self Defense and Self Defense for the Middle-Aged Man
Mindset #1 – Put Situational Awareness and Distance Awareness In The Forefront of Your Personal Safety – You be always be in the moment and notice your environment. Notice suspicious situations and suspicious characters. Once you put on alert your situational awareness, you must know be aware of the proximity of the perceived danger is from you. If you can see danger coming before it hits you, you can either avoid it or more effectively deal with it.
Mindset #2 – Be Not Afraid To Strike First With The Most Destructive Blow Available – The preemptive strike or as some may like to say “the sucker punch” can be the difference between your survival or your demise. When danger approaches, strike first, hard and without hesitation with the most destructive blow available. Let me interject here that one of the easiest to execute and the most destructive first strike blows is the head-butt. The smallest woman or middle-aged man can head-butt an aggressor by surprise and easily cave his nose bone in and knock him out. (Be sure to strike not with the eyebrows or the mid-forehead but with the area high on the forehead, just about where the hairline meets the forehead which is the hardest part of your head.)…

Charles – Our topic for this interview is an answer to a very common problem with those who have not yet been properly trained to handle the stress of real street confrontation. David will give us today 4 ways to avoid freezing when you fight. How are you doing today, David?
David – I am doing wonderful, Charles. How are you?
Charles – I’m doing just good. Alright, let’s get right to it so you can help us out on this subject because part of that fight or fight reaction can be also the freeze reaction when the adrenaline kicks in and overloads and overwhelms a person that has not been prepared for it properly. What are 4 ways to avoid freezing when you fight?
David – Well, Charles –
#1 Is Remembering You Have The Right To Defend Yourself – A lot of people fail to realize that they actually have a right to defend themselves and a right to go home safe everyday.
#2 Is You Need To Fight As Though Your Life Depends On It – Keep in mind that you have a family at home who loves you, treasures you and cares about you. And they rely on you. So, if you don’t fight as though your life depends on it, you life may be taken.
#3 Is Don’t Be Afraid Of Hurting Your Opponent – A lot of times we will freeze during a fight because we think that there’s something morally wrong with putting out someone’s eye or striking someone in the throat, or slamming a fist through a shin or someone’s groin. Nothing could be farthest from the truth. You’re allowed to hurt someone when you fight them. That is what the fight is all about.
#4 Is To Use Minimal Techniques With Maximum Efficiency And Knowing Your Vital Target Areas – If you have a rounded, solid know-how of the vital target areas, you’re going to be less likely to freeze during a fight; you’ll be more likely to fight during a fight.
